🎭 the staircase paradox

This trick is old enough to have a name — the staircase paradox — and young enough to go viral: it circles the internet every few years as "TROLL MATH: π = 4", fooling adults by the thousand. Today it stops fooling you.

🌐The internet's favorite fake

The "π = 4" corner-folding picture is one of the most shared math memes ever made. Its power is that every single step is TRUE — the perimeter really does stay 4 forever. The lie hides in the very last words: "…so in the limit, the lengths must match." They don't have to. That leap is the whole scam.

Every step true. Conclusion false. Chef's kiss. 🎭

🏛️Archimedes did it right

The honest version of "squeeze the circle" exists — it's in Vault №1. Archimedes trapped π between polygons whose lengths genuinely approach the circle's, and even then he only ever claimed bounds: π is between 3 10/71 and 3 1/7. Careful squeezing: math. Careless squeezing: memes.

Same idea. Opposite discipline.

🧵Shapes hide length

A meter of thread crumpled into a tiny ball still measures a meter. Wiggly things pack enormous length into tiny spaces — which is exactly how the staircase stays length-4 while huddling arbitrarily close to a circle of length π. Closeness of shape says nothing about closeness of length.

Coastlines pull the same stunt on maps.

The skill you just earned

Shapes can sneak close while lengths refuse to follow. A limit is a promise about exactly one thing — and the fake proof quietly swaps which thing. Handled with care, the squeeze gives us the circle's true area and infinite sums that land exactly. Handled sloppily, it "proves" π = 4. That care — knowing precisely what a limit promises — is real calculus.
