🪨Numbers with shapes
The Pythagoreans sorted numbers like collectors: triangular numbers (1, 3, 6, 10 — bowling-pin
shapes), square numbers (1, 4, 9, 16), even "oblong" ones. To them a number wasn't just a word —
it had a body. Their pebble pictures are the world's oldest visual proofs.
Math you can hold in your hand. Literally.
📐The gnomon — the L has a name
The L-shaped shell that wraps one square into the next had its own name: the
gnomon, after the L-shaped arm of a sundial. Each gnomon holds the next odd
number of pebbles — that is the whole secret, discovered with beach pebbles
twenty-five centuries before your math class.
Old tools, sharp edges.
🍎Nature performs it too
Around 1600, Galileo rolled balls down ramps and found nature counting in
odd numbers: in equal ticks of time a falling ball covers 1, then 3, then 5, then 7 units —
so the totals are perfect squares. Gravity has been running the gnomon trick since

🃏How to perform it
Ask a friend to add the first ten odd numbers on paper. While they scribble, you: count —
ten numbers — square it — 100. Done. Works for any amount: the first twenty
odds are 400, the first hundred are 10,000. Just make sure the list starts at 1 and skips
nothing — that's what makes the shells stack.
